We live next to a great big field with lots of long grass and weeds. The grandfather had it ploughed a few weeks ago so the grass could take over again (kind of like crop rotation, but without the crops), so a few little critters moved under our carport.

Mom found a snake under the family grill today. Little brown one with a tan stripe and black spots. Mom swore up and down that it was a water mocassin, and there was much panicking. She put a rice pot on top of it so it wouldn't go after the rats (the pet ones).

Took a photo, got it identified. It's a Texas Brown Snake, a little garden snake that eats slugs, is totally non-venomous, and whose MOUTH IS SO SMALL, IT DOESN'T EVEN CATCH ONTO HUMAN SKIN.

Not that THAT matters, because the snakes don't strike with their mouth open anyway. They... kind of headbutt whatever's attacking them.

Mom thought it was adorable once we found out it couldn't kill us. We chased it onto the lawn to go about his business.
